My new favorite breakfast spot in South Shore! I was a loyal Heidi's fan until my boyfriend and I tried Bert's on our way back home to Sac. It is not reigning champion. Pros: - Great service. Prompt and courteous. We were never waiting too long to be checked on and we ordered quickly after being seated. Doesn't get much better. - The food is so good! While it is your typical diner setup and offerings, it over delivers and is very unassuming. My boyfriend ordered the Cowboy Breakfast and it is quite possibly the BEST gravy breakfast I've had. It comes with egg, sausage and biscuits all smothered in gravy with hash browns and it is. to. die. for. I had the corned beef hash with hashbrowns and over easy eggs. The corned beef hash was good but not necessarily the best I've ever had. I put some of the gravy from the Cowboy on it and it turned into the best I've ever had :P (I'm telling you, get the Cowboy or anything with their gravy!) Cons: - It's really busy - or at least when we went it was. The parking lot is somewhat small so be prepared to park in the next door lot and walk over (not a big deal). We'll be back as soon as possible! :-)

Fabulous breakfast spot just outside of South Lake Tahoe on the way in from California. Looks like it's been around for awhile. Maybe 1940's? Not a huge place, so not really good for groups. A party of six crams into a booth for four. Service was excellent. Wait staff of men and women seemed mostly young, skinny, and attractive. Pancakes were delicious. Very tasty and fluffy. Homemade sausage patty was OK. I'd go for the pancakes. Good prices too. Go for it.

A true Local's secret The Best homemade food smoked ham, housemade sausage patties, pancake batters, biscuits, hand formed beef patties, cabbage salad and many more items that NO ONE makes from scratch anymore! I am addicted to their smoked ham, it is just superb, either steak or slice the best flavor!!! my husband loves their sausage breakfast sandwich with their house made patties! their cabbage salad is sooo unique i adore it, crushed ramen noodles (dry) with shredded cabbage, almond slices, sesame oil and vinegar and green onions!!! perfect with any sandwich especially the club sandwich!!!! pancakes are the best in town...........really fluffy and they will even put bacon in the batter for you!!! Their oatmeal is really good as well!!! I adore their crushed ice, especially in the iced tea, but equally nice in sodas and water!!!! Friendly service, locally owned and so nice to see them support local fundraisers and charities..........really part of the community!!!! Tracy is the best waitress!!!! my son has such a crush on her!!!! only open 6am to 2pm so plan accordingly!!!

Oh god, THANK YOU BERT'S CAFE. I had just finished summiting Mt. Tallac after driving from San Jose to Tahoe from 10:30PM to 2:30AM. Began hiking immediately. Had no dinner, no real breakfast, and was going off of fumes by that point. I was so damn exhausted I was beginning to lose my mind. But thank GOD for Bert's cafe. I ordered a fat omelette with bacon on the side with some pancakes. I can say that although it was a lot of food, it stood no freaking chance against my stomach. I needed food, and Bert's cafe delivered quality, and quantity. The service was excellent, the restaurant was extra clean, and the guests were very friendly. I will definitely be back, and I highly recommend this place for all you people!

Great food! Stop by here because we are hungry AGAIN after having a small breakfast at A Cup of Cherries. I had the breakfast combo for $9.99 I picked 3 bacons, 2 over hard eggs and French toast, bf had the breakfast steak and egg. Food was great!!! Delicious! The bill came to $29 with a cup of tea and coffee. The place was moderately busy when we got here and quickly filled up by the local and the tourists. The service was great too! Will return if we are in the area.

Every time my family and I go out for breakfast it is here. We have NEVER been disappointed with our food. Delicious, and not to bad price wise. Everyone is super nice and welcoming. If you're a local and haven't been here, you're not a true local. Love the cozy cafe feel. If I could give more than 5 stars I would.

This restaurant has a good eggs benedict with perfect pouch eggs and hollandaise sauce, served with fruits and roast potato. The muffin was perfectly cooked too. Price is worth it enough and be prepare to wait til be seated. Service was friendly, nice too

This place is awesome! The best chicken fried steak I've ever had. We're here on our honeymoon and we're gonna come here for breakfast every day. Great food, great service.

Good place for a traditional breakfast! Get there early on the weekends. I enjoyed the biscuits and gravy.

We've driven by Bert's many times but always so crowded and thought there would be too long of a wait. So..waited for a quiet Tuesday late morning. What a great place! Very friendly service, decent prices. I ordered the benedict crepes with the hollandaise on the side..came with crispy has browns and fruit..2 decent size crepes. DH ordered the regular EB with country potatoes. Also, a small stack of cakes for good measure...WTH we are on vaca and will hike off the calories. All was wonderful. You can tell everything is homemade..the hollandaise was to die for. Good coffee too. Yay! I'm a fan.

This place makes everything with love. We rolled the dice because it looked cute by were so surprised by the quality of the food. Even the little things like the cup of potato salad or coke slaw that come on the side are delicious and not just "phoned in". Burgers are excellent (if slightly over cooked) and pancakes, eggs Benedict etc all rocked.

Great local cafe breakfast. The menu here is better than Heidi's or Red Hut, the prices are lower, and the service is great. The cafe has an old-school feel, booth seating with wood paneling. Popular with the locals. This place and Rude Brothers are my two go-to South Lake Tahoe breakfasts.

Rolled into town ready for vacation and stopped here for lunch. The pancakes with strawberries looked so good my daughter and I shared those instead. This place is old, so I'm not expecting fancy. The service was great, food was yummy and the wait wasn't too long. The strawberry on top of the pancakes was good but I could tell they thickened the juice with cornstarch or something, a little odd on the tongue. My husband and daughter went again after golf one day and had the cinnamon french toast and loved it. We'd go back and will each time we are at the lake for sure!

My first review in 2015 is for one of the best breakfast "old school" cafes that I've been to. Everything is delicious and reminds you of a home cooked country meal. The breakfast sausage is particularly good and the pancakes might be the best that I've had. The country fried steak is good too.

holy crap, this place is delicious. we came twice on our 5 day vacation because, yes, it is that good. You can tell this place is a family establishment which is pretty cool. The owner was there while we ate, you can tell he LOVES his restaurant as he was interacting with guests, and checking in on meals etc. The breakfasts are fresh and homemade right at Berts and it shows. I had the Mexican omelette with avocado. It was delicious and they don't short you on avocado like a lot of places do. My boyfriend had biscuits and gravy - their gravy is to die for. We also shared a waffle which I'm still thinking about right now. Thanks Berts- everything was GREAT!

  • Matthew R.

Waited outside for an hour. Told it would be 30 minutes. Asked for a cup of coffee while we waited and was told no. Not worth your time. Much better options in tahoe.

    (1)
  • Jay B.

Bert's has a locals spot kind of feel w/ a steady flow of customers. We had the traditional eggs benedict, the Mickey pancake, short stack, sides of two eggs scrambled & corn beef hash. The food was fit for human consumption. The good: Friendly staff Coffee kept coming. Hearty size meals. The bad: Food was standard but not awesome. I would not wait in line for more than 10min & there are plenty of other breakfast spots. The ugly: I will try a new spot on my next visit.

    (3)
  • Happy C.

As the other reviewers already pointed out, their Hollandias is sour, oil and water split off! Taste Gross as well as visually.... Presentation of omelett was awful, tasteless and I have no idea where the positive review comes from...must be some tourist hype or something

    (2)
  • Rachel E.

Great biscuits and gravy! Got the hot chocolate too and loved it. Cute little spot to grab breakfast or lunch while in South Lake.

    (4)
  • Lynda S.

We have voted these cooks and this restaurant the best ever. This place is always hopping and its always a great sign when this is the place the locals in the know come. Try healthy oats, homemade biscuits, hamburger and best breakfast eggs and pancakes! Pancakes are homemade here.

  • Alex T.

The best breakfast spot in South Lake Tahoe. I had the chicken fried steak and gravy that was on the steak was amazing. The gravy was thick, almost chowder like. It was so good, i could have just ate gravy. The steak was fried perfectly and their orange juice is freshly squeezed. There's a lot of parking ,the staff is nice they are quick .If you're looking for a great breakfask, Something that you will remember come here. I am from the bay area and sometimes I think about driving up here just for the breakfast.

  • Theresa S.

Good was excellent and the customer service was the beessst. Oh and since our friend was named Bert too so in honor of him I Got me a mug! :)

  • Kristin L.

Very diner-y, but if that's what you're looking for, Bert's will definitely deliver. The food was heavy and greasy, but in a good way, like all diners should be. A great place to fuel up before (or refuel after) a day on the slopes. And the servers couldn't have been sweeter.

    (4)
  • Kelly F.

Typical diner set-up with extraordinary food. Eggs Benedict were fantastic, if just slightly over cooked. The fresh-made hollandaise was terrific with just the slightest of citrus flavor to lighten the meal. Blueberry pancakes were also great. They were cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of blueberries included. Wait staff was friendly. This is obviously a local favorite, but everyone was incredibly gracious to this pair of tourists.

  • Mark F.

I think we managed to stumble onto a little SLT secret. We were looking for a breakfast before a bike ride and puled over at the Y to consult Yelp. It turned out that Berts was less than half a block away. There was about a 20 minute wait mid-morning on a weekday so that was a good sign. On a whim, ordered the Cowboy without checking on the amounts...was it 4 or 6 biscuits, plus amazing sausage gravy. Hidden underneath was a sausage patty and two eggs. Red potato home fries on the side. All very good and way too much to finish. The servers were super friendly and personable even though it was obvious things were super busy. We'll be back.

Pretty good, so fast the best of the Tahoe breakfast spots I've tried this week in south lake. Cute waitresses. Friendly service. A little pricey.

    (4)
  • Kaley H.

Food was good. Just your average coffee shop. The gravy and biscuits were good and you could tell they were made there. The service was friendly and good, although they were a little overwhelmed when we were there.

    (3)
  • Ted R.

Went here for breakfast today. Had to wait about 15 minutes. Very small place. The breakfast was very good we had pancakes eggs country potatoes toast. Would recommend but I would not wait more than 15 minutes.

  • Marlena C.

I had high hopes for this place since the reviews were so great. We showed up and the waitress was anything but inviting! The coffee there was horrible I couldn't even finish a whole cup and all 4 plates we ordered were disgusting! Such a disappointment!!

  • Rosanna S.

Great food, excellent service! I'm definitely coming back. Best pancakes in town. Fresh food and fresh coffee.

Let me just say that the locals rave about Bert's, now I know why. Locals are rarely wrong. Old School, done right.

    (4)
  • Mark V.

I love their breakfasts. Good coffee. Quality bacon. Went in there for the standard bacon and eggs, they nailed it. The home potatoes are good, but if you like hash browns with a golden, brown crisp and soft in the middle, are even better. Sitting at the counter, you get to watch the cook do his magic. The staff is on it, coffee, water, jellies,... with a smile. Another time I tried "Bert's Sausage Sandwich", ohhhh heavenly delight! Frank's sausage patty with cheese, egg on an english muffin. My new favorite. Did I mention how friendly the staff is? Good food, good staff equals a quality meal for a reasonable price.

    (5)
  • Spooky E.

We stopped by here cuz it looked nice and cozy. We enjoyed our brekkie. Nothing fancy but it tasted home made and realised a lot of items there were made in house which is nice. No complaints! Great staff!

    (5)
  • Simon C.

I like my breakfast cafés to have good coffee, and Bert's definitely has good coffee. The food was great (I got the corned beef hash), and the people were friendly. It's a great place to start your day, an I'll be coming back in the future for sure.

    (5)
  • Brett F.

Terrible service. Tried to get a table for 6, 3 of us were in the restaurant the other 3 in the parking lot. They wouldn't give us the only available table until everyone came on. Then they gave the table to someone that came in after us. I've been a Bert's customer for 15 years & will never go back! The silver lining is I've tried two new places that were great! Red Hut & Bear Beach Cafe. Both way better than Bert's!

    (1)
  • Chris S.

Enjoyed it immensely. The food and service was excellent. I've looked for an authentic Ham Steak since my days in South Carolina. A must visit and what you were looking for for breakfast in Tahoe

    (5)
  • Sara B.

My husband and I had the pleasure of eating here the morning of our wedding and were so pleasantly surprised by the staff, atmosphere and the food! Such kind people and amazing food. We will definitely be back in the near future!

    (5)
  • Al O.

It's a great place!!! Good food, customer's service is great. The price for the food is good and also big portions. We enjoy eating at this place every time we come to Tahoe.

    (5)
  • Samantha F.

Ordered the Spinach and Tomato Benedict- the hollandaise sauce is GROSS. I asked what its made with and I was told they use wine. It tasted like vinegar. The eggs were so runny, I felt uncomfortable eating it. They poured me coffee without asking and charged me for it. Aside from the friendly staff, the food needs a little work.

    (2)
  • Hillery G.

Really the best pancake I have ever had. Chicken fried steak, sausage patty, and the biscuit were all top notch. We were in town for a week and went her twice. You can tell they are making the pancakes fresh - they were light and had a good flavor even without syrup. Loved it!

    (5)
  • Kyle B.

You can tell this place has good food. It's packed! Took my girlfriend and I twenty minutes to get a seat but we really wanted to try this place before leaving Tahoe after reading the reviews. Staff is super friendly! Nice cozy atmosphere to enjoy your meal. The menu is pretty large a whole lot of different choices depending on your breakfast/lunch tastes. We ordered The Cowboy (two eggs, homemade sausage patty, on top of two buttermilk biscuits all smothered in gravy and a side of hashbrowns), Joes Special Frittata (a whole medley of meats and veggies scrambled with two eggs and a side of country potatoes) and we ordered a cinnamon waffle to share. Everything was super tatsy and came with hearty portions. The cinnamon waffle is just a regular waffle though not Belgian style so at a price of $6.50 I expected it to me a little thicker than it was. As far as price goes it's about $12-14 per person for a meal and drink. I rated Bert's 4 out of 5 stars because they do not allow you to substitute anything on the menu even for an additional charge, only add on side orders.

    (4)
  • Allie K.

My boyfriend and I love nothing more in the world than a good breakfast and this is probably the best we have ever had. The corned beef eggs Benedict was so good we came back two days in a row. I had an omelette with avocado and bacon that was stellar as well. This is the best breakfast in South Lake Tahoe hands down

    (5)
  • Renee W.

OMG. Bert's is so yummy and totally comforting for breakfast! I usually don't drink coffee at restaurants (I'm picky) - but this coffee is absolutely tasty and strong. Hash browns were crispy on the outside and soft inside which is exactly how I love them. Corned beef and hash from scratch? Yes please! This is a great place off of Emerald Bay Road...and empty on a Friday morning in early October.

  • Ginger W.

I wanted to like this cafe. I mean, it is homey, local, welcoming, adorable but I am here to eat so the food is what that should be focused on. I couldn't finish the steak breakfast that I ordered because everything was just too greasy and flavorless. At some point I was even thinking to myself: how can a breakfast place messes up their hashbrown? Or scrambled eggs? Or toasted bread? These are like the basics that even Dennys and iHOP won't miss! I am not sure if it's just that day or it's everyday since for some weird reasons MANY of the yelpers are giving this place a full 5 stars. So well.. feel free to go and experience yourself.

Amazing little place. Our waitress savanna was great! Food is delicious! Make sure to try this place out when in Tahoe. It's a must!!

  • Nicole H.

Great place, great service, great food! Has that mom & pop feel to it. I had the pecan waffle, amazing, my hubby had the combination with 3 sausages, eggs over easy & biscuits & gravy. He said the gravy was good & thick. My Pop had the French toast, all of us enjoyed our meal. Decent prices as well.

    (5)
  • Jose Manuel C.

I liked my experience at this place. The owner/manager always checks in :) the food is very unique, and the prices are out the door. Portion sizes are big, as if one was eating breakfast after no eating the prior day. Every time I roll into tahoe I try to eat here!

  • Tiffany C.

We came here on our last visit to Tahoe and had a wonderful experience. Great food, great service, cool mugs. However this time was not that at all. From the moment we walked in we felt like we were bothering the staff. We got our coffee and juice right away, then 5 minutes passed, 10 minutes. We still haven't even given our order yet. The waitress is ignoring us. The owner seems like he is too busy chatting it up with customers. I finally say something to her, "excuse me we have been waiting awhile to put in our order". She looks back and says "I'll get to you when I can" or something to that effect. She wasn't sitting around not doing anything. But the simple thing to do would be to say "sorry guys I'll be right with you". Again felt like we were bothering her. I hate feeling that way when we are paying for a service. Another 5 minutes pass. Then she comes over and says "what do you want?" No apology, no nothing. Just attitude. I stop my husband in the middle of his order and say to her "I get that you're busy, but you didn't even apologize for making us wait over 15 minutes to take our order". She defended herself with an attitude "well I'm the only one on the floor". I simply said "still we would have appreciated some sort of 'sorry about the wait guys' or something like that". We decided it would be best to just leave. The owner says "I'll make it up to you on your next trip. Total bummer because their biscuits and gravy were great, but there's no reason why the waitstaff have to treat the customers so badly. And the owner seemed like he didn't care.

A very homey family-owner diner and be prepared to wait a little if you come during peak brunch hours! We stopped by here on our way back home from Tahoe and it did the job of hitting the brunch spot. We sat at the counter area since the restaurant is small but it worked out fine. The bf ordered a regular breakfast dish with potato hash, eggs, sausage and toast (which they butter already for us...yay!) I ordered the eggs benedict, which were quite a lot to eat for my, actually. They came with a potato hash too. I think the hollandaise sauce was probably really filling. I wasn't that impressed by the hollandaise sauce actually. It wasn't bad but it didn't stand out that much to me and it almost seemed like it was a little too much and smothered the english muffin and ham. The poached eggs were cooked well though! Service was pretty good and prices were fair :)

  • Blake B.

Now this is what a cafe should be like. Nothing fancy just good food and a lot of it at a cheap price. We hit up Bert's on our way out of Tahoe and had a great meal. There was definitely a wait but it wasn't too long as we got there relatively early.

    (4)
  • Cassie H.

Great place! We came in 5 minutes to closing time (unknowingly or else we wouldn't have made such a rude move), but they greeted us warmly and said it was absolutely not a problem. The food and coffee were delicious and our server was genuine and delightful. Bert's should give Ernie's a lesson on how to do things right.

    (5)
  • Ryan B.

Yum! Biscuits and homemade sausage gravy! I will be back given the chance!

    (4)
  • Danielle C.

After trying other comparable breakfast restaurants in the area, Bert's was a clear winner. I highly recommend the pancakes...they were probably the best I've ever had (and I LOVE iHop so that was hard to say). The scrambled eggs were good and I got 3 pieces of bacon with the combination. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive despite the busy Saturday morning rush. Our drinks were always full and everyone seemed to have a great attitude. Great place and will defiantly visit again!!

  • Gio B.

Overall, nice place to have breakfast. First the Positives: Great service, nice & friendly and not "fake" Fast Service, wide variety of options to choose from Cute atmosphere, very homey and country Food was good, not exceptional, but good. Affordable Coffee was great, and they kept our cups full! The Negatives: The booths towards the front all smell like oil because of the proximity of the kitchen The eggs benedict was a little strange, the hollandaise sauce was swimming on the plate and it was not tasty, and little oil perhaps, it needs some work No American Express, only visa/ master card Overall, I would come back to this place. Also worth noting, in a touristic city where there are many restaurants to have breakfast, most have two cars the parking lot, Bert's has 20! Always a good sign, and it seems like it's a favorite among the locals.

    (4)
  • S C.

Great old school diner breakfast. Standard perked coffee was not good. Pancakes and crepes were great! Just wish they had a few local fresh products namely eggs. Service was great and friendly even though they were swamped.

  • Cheryl J.

One of the best breakfast restaurants I have been to in a very long time! We got there and maybe waited for 5-10 min to be seated..not bad. The bacon and hotcakes were phenomenal! So much of their food is from scratch. I can't wait to go back to Tahoe and have breakfast there again! Don't waste your time looking for somewhere to go.... Go to Bert's.

    (5)
  • Halley S.

I dig it. Bert himself met us at the door with a warm welcome and chatted it up while we waited to be seated. We got there just before 8:30 and narrowly beat the rush. All the staff were turning and burning tables, and we enjoyed watching the operation from our seats at the bar. As for the food, this is a classic breakfast spot with a good selection on the menu. I got the French toast with warm blueberry topping, it was delicious. My boyfriend had hashbrowns, eggs, bacon. His hash browns weren't crispy, sort of under done. We were generally really pleased with the meal though. Solid breakfast, comfortable dining experience, just whay we were looking for as tourists starting out for a day of exploring.

  • Sammy C.

I think this place is overrated; we've dined here once for brunch when we were on the way back to Sacramento from Lake Tahoe. I ordered the steak and egg and my husband ordered their pancake and sausage meal and two cups of hot coffee; coffee was too blend that it tasted almost like water, not to mention waking me up. The steak was way overcooked and I was having difficulty to even chew it, I only ate 1/3 of the steak (egg was good). My husband did like their pancake and sausages though, it was very tender and went very well with that butter. Customer service was awesome! They were all very friendly and I believe that's the reason why the local customers keep coming back. However, I probably won't be coming back for their food and coffee.

We had the bacon waffle and the rancheros burrito, came out to less than $18. We were seated quickly and had a great waitress.

  • Voiceof R.

We love Bert's - it's among the best breakfast joints in the area. Service is always friendly and on point, atmosphere is warm and cozy. The only thing that keeps them from five stars is that though most of the food is spot on, it IS possible to order the occasional clunker - had a ham steak once that was dry as sawdust - but 90% of the menu is great, prices are cheap by Tahoe standards and service is excellent. If you're a tourist or new to the area, check them out!

    (4)
  • Justin R.

Food was pretty good but the reason I really liked this place was the service. The waiter and the person who showed us to the table seemed genuinely friendly and happy doing their jobs. I will definitely come back here next time I'm in tahoe.

  • Edith S.

It my first time coming to Lake Tahoe and one of the things I wanted to do is find a great breakfast place luckly by word of mouth we found this place. It was delicious I had one of there specialities which was the hash..another first time..my bf and son had the omlettes which were incredible. .you definatly need to have the hot chocolate. The service was great and it really seemed like it was a family owned place. This will be our breakfest spot when we are in Tahoe.

    (5)
  • Nicki I.

Great service and great food. Only open till 2:00 p.m., so plan for breakfast or lunch. A lot of homemade sauces and dishes. Best menu I have seen in a long time - too many choices for just one visit.

  • Sean W.

As far as breakfast diners go, this one is a must for SLT visitors. While the cafe seemed old and a bit weathered, the food more than makes up for it. We waited about 5 minutes for a table to open up, and our order was quickly taken. Less than 6 minutes later, our food was ready. The pancakes are among the best I've ever tasted, but the frittatas made the meal. The only issue I had was the watery coffee (probably just my own personal preference). The fresh squeezed OJ was delicious too. I definitely recommend this place!

Best breakfast and lunch in South Lake! I'm a local and eat here very frequently. Highly recommend the Ranchero Burrito and Crepes Benedict.

  • Lisa B.

Came here one morning before we left town. There were 6 of us and it was a 30 minute wait, but it was well worth it. Very friendly service and the food was DELISH. I ordered the Cowboy (my eyes are always bigger than my stomach) If you're like me I would recommend the Cowgirl since it's basically the same but a smaller portion. Our food came out fast, we were in and out in about 30 minutes. I will come back next time we are in town again.

  • Colby O.

Just ok... not much for good breakfast in this town really. Stick with the buffet at Harras or Driftwood cafe... nothing like Kimmies or Pegs in Reno or Brandon in Southern Cal.... Welcome to basic food in Tahoe..

  • Jeff R.

Went to Bert's for breakfast on a Sunday in early March, 2014. This place has been around awhile. Found it on YELP. Had a short wait when we arrived, but people started showing thereafter and I bet they had at least a 30 minute wait. I liked the food, it had decent portions, coffee was not a winner, the hot chocolate which we didnt order was cool, came in a large mug with a MAJOR mountain of whipped cream. Wait staff was jumping and didnt really check on us, but place small enough that a wave of the hand and they were there when needed. Overall I would go back. I liked it.

    (4)
  • Christophe C.

Pretty full seating but we only had to wait a few minutes. Severs are friendly, and food came quickly enough. I got the corned beef hash which was just enough to fill me up. Companions had the ribeye and the cowboy special. Wouldn't advise the ribeye, but that's his own fault for getting steak in a non steakhouse xD. Cowboy was interesting, very carb heavy though. All in all a good diner.

I absolutely love this place!! Great food and great service! The prices are a little high but well worth it. The food is so amazing. It tastes like a home cooked breakfast.

If u care at all about your health , skip this place. Def a greasy spoon, gave me a stomach ache. Had the California omelette, chose it because of the avocado.... Had to call the server over because there was no avo to be found and I thought I had the wrong order. Coffee was weak. Really nice people, including owner and his wife, but I wasn't pleased with the food. My partner ordered a banana that was processed. Come on. Cheap products. Also the kitchen staff don't wear gloves during food prep, I witnessed from the counter seats, the hash browns were pressed down on the grill with bare hands

Okay so first off, THE GUY THAT LOOKS KINDA LIKE JAMES FRANCO IS SOOOOOO HOT. Next off, this place is awesome! It has the best breakfast and service in town. Seriously, it is great to walk in there, everyone is welcoming and the food comes out pretty fast, so when I'm starving or extremely hungover, this is the place I go! Five stars keep up the good work. And keep the hot busboy!

Finding this was a bugger, kept passing it because we couldn't see the sign. Lol. Even after we'd been here. Food was awesome, ate here two days in a row. Great service, very friendly and very knowledgable and helpful with the menu. If I had to pick something I'd change, I would've toasted the pecans that came on my bacon waffle. Other then that, great place and great food!!

My wife and I love Breakfast. This place is the best in South Lake Tahoe! Not fancy. More homey would be correct. The staff is fantastic and attentive. The food is fresh and tastes homemade. I had a Frittata egg dish with home fries and it was awesome. Our friend had the eggs Benedict and he claimed the Hollandaise was great. Bert, the owner, came to out table and chatted with us. Great breakfast and great experience!

Had breakfast here March 5th. Service was friendly, food was fast and good, portions are big. Decent coffee. The only down side is the place is really small, with booth seating only, no table and chair seating. There are about half a dozen stationary seats at the counter as well.

I Iikenthe food there, but the service sucks. While I was waiting my turn for a table or counter behind another couple, another couple walked in after we were there for ten minutes waiting. The owner comes out and starts to talk to this couple and obviously knew each other and the owner says to the couple, come on, I got a couple spots at the counter for you and then took them in front of us and the other couple who had been there first. Soooo rude!! So I left and went to Downtown Cafe in Meyers and had the best breakfast ever. They are so much friendlier and the redneck Benedict was so awesome! Forget Bert's, they are horrible!

Great local cafe. We got the eggs Benedict-eggs and the scramble eggs combo. The egg benedict isn't your normal benedict. It was actually scramble with the sauce on the top. The sauce was surprisingly good. The service was friendly and relaxing. The wait time wasn't very long (20min compare to another cafe that was 45min). Tasty food, great service, and min wait time. I can't complain.

This was a great place to come. We looked it up and the review online and so happy we came by. They waitress was so sweet and kind and made us laugh. She had a refill before we even asked and the toast to my family makes the breakfast meal and it was amazing! My brother and sister-in-law asked her what kind it was and she was happy to tell her it was brought in from Truckee, Ca. Needless to say they went to every store to find it and picked up 4 loafs. My bacon waffle needed no syrup just butter and it was so yummy, i will definitely be getting that again on our next Tahoe trip!!!

We stopped here on the way home from a Lake Tahoe visit. The place was pretty busy, and looked to be a lot of returning regulars... I now know why! The staff was awesome! The food was amazing-and the MAYBE 15 minute wait for a seat was worth it! They are ran and remind me of an old fashioned diner and cook great/huge portions of food like it too.

First of all, I would like to say that the food here is amazing. It can sometimes be a long wait for a table depending on how busy it is (I came in on a Sunday so it was fairly busy), but it is well worth the wait. The cooks are so entertaining to watch and they do a great job. I absolutely love the food. Our waitress was terrible though. She was very slow in getting our food to us, had an attitude, and was texting in what I'm assuming is the "break area" in clear sight. I was appalled. I also noticed she was rolling her eyes at customers' requests and at the employees countless times. Terrible and rude waitress. The host and hostesses were lovely with making sure I was seated in a timely manner and with refilling my drink, I never went empty!

This is the best true old fashioned short order breakfast spot on the south shore. The staff is always friendly and remembers all the locals names. I have only come in for breakfast but they also have lunch items.

We were looking for a good breakfast place in So Lake Tahoe and Bert's filled the bill. The whole menu looked so good it was hard to decide. I had the spinach and tomato benedict and thought it the best. But our whole party scored on what they ordered. this is a must try for your tahoe adventure. Short wait and well worth it.

My favorite breakfast joint in SLT. The staff is super friendly. The coffee is excellent. The food is better than average and a great value. It looks like a hole in the wall (It is) and has great people. The other guests are always friendly. A mix of locals and vacation regulars. Much better food than the decent, but crowded Ernie's across the street. BTW, both are good, but Bert's is better and cheaper.

Super cute greasy spoon that hasn't been renovated since the 1960s (or thereabout) and has that classic vibe. I was expecting the food to be mediocre, but it was actually delicious! In particular my pecan waffle was outstanding; plenty of pecans, a nice dense nutty batter, and deliciously crispy outside (something I'd never experienced in a waffle before!) . I could have easily eaten two of them, but it's probably a good thing that it only came with one. Can't speak to their other entrees, but I would definitely order their waffle again!

My friends and I were looking for a place to grab some lunch after doing some exploring in the area, and we came upon Bert's Cafe. The place was pretty packed when we got in, but luckily we didn't have to wait too long for a table. The staff was really friendly and the owner (who I assume is Bert) came by to check up on us several times. I'm sure he could tell it was our first time there, since we kind of stuck out (5 Asians). I decided to order an avocado burger and one of my friends ordered a southwest burger, and we split the burgers in half so we could each have a half. Both burgers were really good. Everyone at our table ordered food with fries as a side, haha! Their fries are definitely good. They are not thick sliced, but they have a nice crunch on the outside and the inside is still soft. The wait staff is friendly and attentive. Our waitress came by several times to refill coffee without anyone having to ask. I definitely recommend checking this place out if you are in the area.

This place is great! The wait was pretty long but now I understand why. The price for our food was very reasonable too. Service was super quick considering how packed with customers it was that morning. The employees were all friendly and happy to help. I ordered a combination breakfast and the pancakes were cooked well and tasted amazing. I can't think of any complaints for this place. I had the best breakfast here hands down!

Best breakfast we had during the 5 days we were in Tahoe! Tracy's family owns the cafe and is a breathe of fresh air! Great service, loads of smiles, super clean restaurant, and delicious food! My husband had the Pigs in a Blanket...you have to order this!! Coffee is strong and delicious. And they make you feel like a regular :)

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, so every time I go out of town I look forward to trying the local joints. If you are in a hurry-- this is not the place for you! The wait can be a bit long and the food takes a while to come out. I had a view of the kitchen from my table and there seems to only be two men cooking for the entire place! Also, if you want the wait staff to kiss your ass- do not come here because the waitress isn't very chatty. However, I can appreciate a server that doesn't pretend to care how your day is. I didn't mind the wait because the food was worth it. I got the Cowboy combo-- 2 biscuits, a sausage patty, two eggs, and potatoes. The biscuits were fresh and soft. The gravy was great. I loved the use of red peppers to give it a subtle sweetness. The sausage patty was one of the best I've ever had. We decided to split a pecan waffle because they boast about their homemade batter. Easily one of the best tasting waffle I've ever had. Also, had the hot chocolate because we couldn't resist after seeing the mountain of whipped cream they pile on top. The younger girl with the darker hair was sweet enough to stop by the table towards the end of our meal after we inquired about it to see it we were interested. Can't wait to eat here again and try more of their offerings. The corned beef hash looked incredible.

Breakfast food is breakfast food. It is hard to screw up and hard to excel. Bert's does neither. Still the $ rating should be at least $$. $11.95 for Eggs Benedict for crying out loud. OK, this is a resort area and if it were down on the water with a great view I might understand. When the view out the window is a gas station, different matter. The food was good, the coffee watery but tasted fine. Service was good but my observation was that staff could have been cut by two with no detrimental effect on service. We did have a minor service problem. One waitress asked if we wanted more coffee and we declined. Seconds later another waitress started pouring more coffee without asking. No big deal, just an irritation.

We came to this place looking for a good breakfast while waiting out the snow storm before snowboarding. We were so disappointed. I've had a better breakfast at denny's!! I want to make note that 3 of us ordered the same thing - biscuits & gravy. I LOVE biscuits n gravy , one of my favorites. The gravy was DISGUSTING!!! It tasted really spicy, kind of cheesy? Like some strange southwestern style of gravy. Yuck. None of us liked it. My other friend had a blueberry waffle and said it was really good. Hard to mess that up. Service was fine. Until we got ready to check out. We asked to split our ticket. The young girl at the register gave me a look like "are you serious?" as I started to tell her what I had. She interrupted me to tell me that she needed us to tell her what we all have. Which I responded with "thats what i was doing?". She was super rude about it. She told me she would have to go get someone else. The older waitress comes and looks at us and looks equally as annoyed. She tells us that it will be a minute. She comes back 10 minutes later with our checks divided. Apparently they don't know how to do simple math here. I def won't be returning!!

Tried to go here the last time I was in Tahoe and the wait was too long. This time around, was there early and got seated right away. I'll have to say, next time, I'll wait to eat here again. I was there with my family (wife and two kids under 10). Ordered standard eggs and bacon, while my wife had an omlette and kids had pancakes. They don't have a separate kids menu, except for the Mickey Mouse pancakes. Not knowing how large the portions are, I ordered short stacks for my kids a side of bacon and hashbrowns. First, these pancakes were huge and tasty! My son dove right in and loved em. The bacon was nice and crisp, hashbrowns golden on the outside and tender on the inside. Just like they should be. Service is wonderful. All were very responsive and attentive. I highly recommend this place.

Berts breakfast burrito, A+ Beat the Red Hut rush and grab a Bert's breakfast. You can hit it right on the way in to SLT coming down the hill into the valley if you are up early enough. Don't get me wrong, I will give Red Hut a 5 star review as well, as they both have their strengths (Red Hut Waffles and Biscuits and Gravy are amazing, but Berts definitely has the upper hand on the Breakfast Burrito), but Berts just has that "off the beaten path" feel to it. That's probably because it is, well... off the beaten path so to speak :)

now THAT"s what i call a diner! what he had: steak and eggs with hashbrowns with biscuit and side order of country gravy - YUMMY. the gravy has BACON. what's not to love with bacony creamy goodness? what i had: huevos rancheros - quite possibly the best hangover food in the world. i asked my eggs to be over medium + and it was perfect. good friendly service. will go back when in town.

Bert knows how to cook with grease and serve it up fast!! We had coffees and as busy as it was we received our food super fast! The hash browns were just right, eggs cooked exactly as we ordered them, meat and gravy all outstanding. They make their own beef hash and my partner said the country fried steak was the best in years. The old small town rural vibe was running strong and made me nostalgic for my own old hometown diner. The staff was friendly and it was packed with locals and tourists alike.

A good old fashioned diner right on the edge of Lake Tahoe. Fast and friendly service, good selection of breakfast food American style and regular coffee top ups. The place is full of locals which is usually a good sign, and you're looking at about $15 for a pretty hefty breakfast. Not cheap, but again this part of the world is a bit of a wallet gobbler anyway. Only two minor gripes: the heavily chlorinated water (typical around this area) is really pretty nasty and the only option in the coffee is half and half - although I didn't actually ask for regular milk. Other than that, make sure you pay this little gem a visit on your way on or out of Tahoe.

Ah, good ol' Bert's Cafe. A South Lake Tahoe staple for me. One of those places so good that there is no reason to keep trying new places so long as they're still around. Fast and friendly service. Basic menu with the staples I need in the morning. Long, slender restaurant shape with a classic breakfast diner feel. I almost always get the breakfast combo which is a choice of bacon, sausage or ham with 2 eggs any style and pancakes or biscuit and gravy. The bacon is probably a B, not the best, but it is bacon so it is still good. The ham also is good and I get this when I'm feeling less meaty. The over medium eggs usually are cooked to perfection and the highlight is the homemade biscuit and gravy. Some pepper in the gravy makes it somewhat spicy - the flavor is amazing! Don't forget about the cottage cheese which you can also order as a side. Bonus. Prices are not cheap, but moderately reasonable and fair. They get you in and out quickly so you can get on the mountain at a good time with a full belly. I've been to Ernie's across the street and didn't get the same love I feel when I'm at Bert's. See you again soon!

I'm always pleased when I'm able to make it to Bert's. This happens pretty rarely, and almost always only when company comes in from out of town. This place serves up classic American diner food for breakfast and lunch, and keep in mind it closes at 2PM. I wish it'd stay open later, because I would totally go there for late lunch or dinner. Occasionally there is a line to get in, but the wait is usually minimal even though it's packed. Parking is normally a non-issue, though I've been here a few times where I had to wait for someone to leave. I usually order the french toast plate which comes with french toast, eggs cooked to your order and some bacon or sausage. Very pleased with the food, french toast is cooked just right, not soggy and not dry. Eggs are eggs, but they've never had that overly crispy outside edge which I only like once in a while. Bacon or sausage are both tasty and I enjoyed their hash browns and corned beef hash as well. Haven't really strayed from these choices so I can't comment on their biscuits and gravy and the like, but I'll try to get other stuff the next time I eat there. The portions are enough to fill most people up and depending on how much you can pack it in, you might end up with leftovers. Never had any problems with the service so far.

In Tahoe, the land of a gazillion breakfast joints, Bert's holds the flame for the small, old-school, greasy-spoon diner. Yes, it's better than Red Hut...there I said it. (I think Red Hut's overrated, but that's another review). As a local, when I want a big solid fast-and-cheap breakfast with great service, this is where I go. That's exactly what I wanted this morning, and Bert's delivered, with a make-your-own frittata delight. I walked out relaxed, happy, and full, and isn't that what a diner like this is for?

  • Iris P.

Went to Bert's for breakfast on our last day of vacation. I had read the Yelp reviews, and I was looking forward to having some breakfast crepes, which some people had raved about. I ordered their banana crepes and literally got three crepe shells filled with banana slices. Nothing more. nothing less. No sauce or toping or any form of extra filling of any kind. That was it. The crepe shells weren't even made that well. I'm not an expert on crepes, but I was left pretty disappointed with this order. BUT, on a positive note, I was very thankful that I also ordered their French toast, which was amazing!!! I'm not usually into French toast because they're normally too sweet for my taste, but something made me want to try this one and I'm so glad I did. Overall, I gave Bert's 4 stars for their friendly staff, fast waiting time, cozy atmosphere, and unforgettable French toast.

Why does Truckee have a dearth of good breakfast places while South Lake Tahoe seems to be overflowing with them. For my last breakfast in South Lake Tahoe, I was on my way to the Myers' Downtown Cafe. If you've been through Myers, gotta love a sense of humor to name a place like that. Just south of the Y in South Lake Tahoe, I spied the old drive in. The place screamed character. As I circled back around, I made the decision that I would eat at Bert's if there were significant good reviews on Yelp. There were and I'm glad I stopped. For a breakfast place to get above three stars, they have do something with a flair. There weren't any specials that I noticed on a Monday morning. The menu had the typical pancakes, eggs, etc. Then I saw that they had crepes, various fruits for both the pancakes and waffles, "Mexican" breakfast choices, etc. Final settled on the breakfast burrito which they substituted sausage for the bacon without question. The burrito was big enough for to take it home for the next breakfast. Friend staff who asked me with a smile on her face if I had a reservation on this morning where only one booth was filled. Attentive to the coffee and water supply. This appears to be their second location after moving in 2003. They must be doing something right. While I still want to get to the other breakfast places in South Lake Tahoe, this is a great "backup" until that happens.

It was our first time at this place during Labor weekend. At first, we got there I would said the service was friendly. We ordered couple dishes and everything was so good. Excellent breakfast! Biscuits and gravy were delicious, waitress friendly and attentive we sat at the counter. Watching the cooks was a highlight. I love this place. I came here once years ago and just happened by while looking for breakfast. It is not fancy. The charm is in the staff and how they work together efficiently and while dodging each other and customers. The juevos rancheros were good. If you are snobby about food maybe don't come here. If you can appreciate good value and a well run operation give it a shot. It just gave me a comfortable feeling being there.

I always go for the standard 2 eggs, hashbrown, toast, and if I'm feeling a little crazy a few strips of bacon. Two day I was feeling a lityle crazy. The hash brown had potential. It was crispy on the outside but undercooked on the inside. Eggs were good, bacon excellent, toast was pre buttered and there was just too much grease. I prefer to butter myself so next time ill ask for that. Waitresses are super friendly and they kept our coffee cups full.

food was good. eggs benedict was ok... a little spicy for me maybe a bit too much? tabasco? I went to support the local businesses. will I go out of my way to go back again? Hmmm not sure there are other places that are good for breakfast as well. service was great. the other things on the menu I cannot comment on.

Oh, yeah, Bert's rocks! This unassuming little cafe right off Highway 50 is a hidden gem. What a great place to fill up on your traditional American breakfast fare. Pancakes, cornbeef hash and fantastic waffles are just amung some of the freshly prepared items at Bert's; and it shows. I had the pancakes and they truely tasted like what you'd expect freshly made from scratch one would. Awesome location, too! Right on the way to some of the popular ski/snowboard parks/resorts makes it an easy trip in and out.

I truly do think I'm spoiled with the food in Tahoe, especially when compared to the Bay Area. However in Tahoe you have a variety of options when it comes to breakfast fare and frequent travelers and yelpers will start reading at the top. Let me tell you something, there are few places in Tahoe which will disappoint and fewer which will excite. For me, Bert's compared to the other options is "okay" but that's simply because there are a lot of other places you can go to. If you compare it to your "Red Hut", "Denny's" or "Carrows" options as your baseline, Bert's will kick them to the curb. Parking is great, and finding the cafe is fairly painless, but it is not near the main strip/drag of South Lake, so it'll get knocked there. There's plenty of seating (compared to places like the old Red Hut location, and the one on Kingsbury) so it makes up there. The variety of food makes me happy. I like eggs benedict and this place doesn't disappoint. The coffee, service and potatoes which came with it left me feeling full (and potentially sleepy!) so you are definitely going to not end up thinking there's more. The prices are South Lake Tahoe prices (so no, no $6.00 all you can eat buffet) but not crazily exorbitant especially for the quantities you get. Quality... It's your standard, nothing fancy (e.g. the sauce for eggs benny at Driftwood is different, as is the one at Fox & Goos in Sacramento) so you won't be surprised. Whether that's good or bad, is up to you. Not much of a view to speak of (unless you like watching the pretty girls on the wait staff) as it's set a bit off the road with the large windows facing the gas station. Plenty of seating with large booths and counter space, so those with families and children will find it welcoming w/o the awkwardness of other locations. Overall, I'd rather go here than a few other places that people seem to love in South Lake. Is it on my top 5? Sure, but it being a bit out of the way will make it an infrequent trip for me, unfortunately.

I like Bert's because the waitresses are so fantastic that they know when I order the hangover special (ie huevos rancheros) to bring me motrin with my order. I like Bert's because they don't judge us when we show up looking like the cats drug us in, but laugh at us instead. I like Bert's because they always give us a smile with our eggs, and it makes your day brighter. I like Bert's because they let me order the California Omelette in a crazy way with fruit instead and don't give me a hard time about it. Thanks Beth! You're the best.

This place is awesome! Everyone here is very friendly and welcoming and they have the best omelettes. I ordered the mexican omelette while my hubby had the california omelette and let me tell ya...we wiped our plated clean! The hashbrowns were perfectly cooked. I'd definitely come back here.

Great little locals spot. Good hearty food. This place is not your health food shop. If you buy your food at Whole Foods and only eat organic everything, move on. However, if you are looking for a good old fashion American breakfast, this it the spot. It can get a little busy on but it is worth it.

Cold Tahoe morning, breakfast hour, time to stop at Bert's for breakfast. Luckily, not too crowded for a Sunday morning, but still a short wait for a table to clear out. It seemed like we just beat a string of folks coming in for a late breakfast before heading out of town. We were seated at a booth right near the door. Quite a lot of hustling and bustling with the wait and hostess staff, but not too disruptive. All of the staff were very nice and patient with me, it sometimes takes me forever to decide what I want. I think it is that inner tension between ordering something healthy vs. ordering something YUMMY. Sometimes the two things just do not come together. I debated on the spinach omelette, but seemed to remember it just being ok the last time I had come here. SO, I chose something I rarely do, huevos rancheros. I was hoping for shredded meat and it just sounded good. SG ordered the California Omelette, which I heard several tables around us order as well. It came with hash browns and bread. All the items were around $10 each. We passed on coffee, since we had some STRONG stuff back at the cabin. Our meals arrived and everything looked pretty good. I was a little bummed to find that the meat was just ground beef rather than shredded (maybe that is normal for huevos rancheros, but that's not how I would do it.) SG thought his omelette was just ok. The hash browns were good, but mainly because they were BUTTERY! Service was ok, but we did not test it much without coffee to refill. The staff is super nice, the place is clean, the food is average or slightly above, but for the price, its just a 3. Next time we go up, it will be Ernie's for comparison. We will still hit this place now and again, since there are not many good breakfast spots in the area.

Went here a week ago while heading out of tahoe for the bay area, based on the reviews. My husband went to culinary school so I always do lots of research before going anywhere! Do NOT go anywhere else! We parked, and as we walked in the waitress already had menus in her hand for us, she saw us pull up. We got immediate and great service. My husband had the crepes hollandaise with the sauce on the side. He makes crepes at home and still said they were some of the best crepes he has ever had as they had a little bit of sweetness to them. I had to try both a pancake (based on the reviews) and the biscuits and gravy. I can still taste how amazing the biscuits and gravy were. Perfect amount of flavor, 2 huge biscuits open face, took up the entire place with sauce. This is our new favorite place for breakfast, WOW

Came here today, (a Sunday) and we got seated right away. Our coffee cups stayed full, as did our soda glass. We all got the "Cowboy" breakfast. The sausage is amazing. The biscuits were awesome! All in all a wonderful breakfast experience.

I was raised in South Lake Tahoe, but unfortunately Bert's didn't arrive until after I graduated. Here is what I love about this place. Family owned and operated by one of the nicest, caring families on the planet. Everything is homemade, bot canned or homogeneous. I ALWAYS get the crepes Benedict (with hollandaise on the side). It is heaven-in-a-crepe. My gut-busting (and workout freak- go figure) father loves the Cowboy. It is fresh biscuits, poached eggs with sausage covered in awesome, from scratch gravy. My hubby is a french toast lover and sticks to the basics and is always very pleased. I am heading to the lake this weekend and will make a stop here for my "fix."

Here's a funny thing about South Lake Tahoe. There are actually too few restaurants to meet the demands of folks arriving during tourist season, so many of the existing restaurants are only visited once a year - or maybe once ever - so they don't really have to do a good job. Places can limp along knowing that there just won't be any place else to go when a skier is dying for breakfast after a 3-hour, pre-dawn drive. (Denny's is one of the busiest places in town whenever tourists are around; this has gotta tell you something.) So, if you're on vacation, and a restaurant is very, very busy at peak meal times, you'll probably assume that it MUST be good. (See Dan Ariely's *Predictably Irrational* for more on this.) What you don't realize is that (1) EVERY crappy restaurant in South Lake Tahoe that can manage to be open is busy, and (2) you're getting hungrier and hungrier as you wait; you'd happily devour buttered cardboard by the time you get to order. I'm being a little harsh on Bert's, since so many of the other reviews are over the top ("BEST FUD U EVR 8!!!!!!!! 5 *s"); I feel statistically obligated to bring this down to something more realistic. If pressed, I would probably give Bert's 2 Yelp stars. Anyway, here are some details: coffee: SUCKS; in this day and age, why doesn't everyone realize that Farmer Brother's coffee is tasteless crap? How about a dark roast with some flavor, people?! crepes: terrible, doughy, undercooked, flavorless (GOOD crepes should be a little rubbery, chewy - maybe even gooey - but NOT like wet pancake dough. Crispy edges and chewy centers are a good touch, too, but Bert falls WAY short of the mark on this.) bacon: like jerky (some may like it like this) eggs: ordered over medium, received over easy; scrambled were not very good (too dry) sausage: The skin was so tough, I had to use a knife to cut bites; is this due to sitting on a grill for too long? Flavor was okay, but, hey, it's fried pork with salt - it's gotta taste pretty good. pancakes: not too bad, fluffy ambiance: nice, cozy, old alpine diner cost: not bad; 2 combination breakfasts, 2 cups of tea, tax ($1.92) and tip ($4): $27.82. By the way, if they recognize you as a local, you'll probably get good service. If they think you're an out-of-towner, the waitress may not be able to hide her disgust. We *are* locals, but one waitress once mistook us for well-to-do tourists; she never smiled, she never checked on us, and she dropped the check on our table without a word - about the least friendly service I've ever had. I guess it's all part of the South Lake Tahoe gambling enjoyed by visitors.

We are new fans of Berts Cafe. Found this Resturant on our drive home today. It was around noon so deciced on Burgers. WOW! the best one I have had in a Resturant in a very long time. Bun was fresh and very different from the usual. Meat cooked well but not dry. and very freshly made. The fries were very crisp the way my husband likes, severded HOT. I myself had the Mexican Burger with Ortega chili, Avocado, and pepper jack cheese. We will be back.

I've always found it funny and cool that there is a place called "Bert's" right across the street from a place called "Ernie's". Both establishments are good, although I find myself eating at Bert's more often. Bert's is a little bit smaller, and I like the diner-like atmosphere and the friendly staff. The food really hits the spot; fresh ingredients and hot off the grill. You won't find any eclectic cuisine here, just good 'ole home-style cooking. They only serve breakfast and lunch, and I believe they close at 2pm. So go early and go often. ^__^

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME FOR BREAKFAST. Their hot coco is amazing. They tower it with whip cream. Biscuits & gravy were amazing. The breakfast burrito is amazing. We were in Tahoe for 4 days and we went there 3 out of the 4 mornings. They get really busy and it's where all the locals go. We had to go really early in the morning. The service is fast and amazing. The waitress are really nice.

More like 2 1/2 stars. If you come here, i suggest that you just order the pancakes. I must say it's one of the best pancakes I have ever tasted.. and I'm not really a pancake person. Also their hash browns are really good.. nice and crunchy on the outside. The reason I gave such a low review is bc I ordered the corn beef hash eggs benedict.. and it was so not good. It was mushy. my husband ordered the huevos rancheros... really really not good. the beans were CANNED! someone on our table ordered corn beef has on the side.. it was better than the one with my eggs benedict. If I came back, I would order pancakes with a side of hash browns and corn beef hash.

this place was boss! The California Frittata was delicious, I highly recommend it. The Hash browns were out of this world. I now have new standards for all hash browns which i have named the "Berts Standard". Now for the environment, the place was relaxed and quickly accommodating for a group of 11. Our waitress was very friendly, as well as the rest of the team. This was the perfect way for me to end my trip in Tahoe with my buddies. Man I miss the hash browns!!!!!

The best breakfast joint in the area. I like the Hut but it is just too cramped. This place has great food plus a cozy atmosphere. I am a huge corn-beef n hash fan and this place service up a mighty fine hash. Also there pancakes and bacon are good to. The service gets the job done but the coffee is pretty weak like most breakfast joints.

I always stop here before leaving Tahoe. I tried out Heidi's and Denny's like the others here, and they're right- this place is ALWAYS my number one choice for breakfast. I guess since i'm latin, i'm always prone to get the chorizo omelette-forgot the name for it, but good lord it's yummmmy =] Everything is good there- even the waitresses-they're nice and always checking in on us and refilling our coffee cups( but not annoyingly)! It's a busy place, but they dont rush you at all- Great place! =]

I had to see if this place was as good for lunch as it was for breakfast and oh boy was it. I ended up with a fried egg sandwich was mouth watering good. My wife got there veggie burrito which also looked great and my mother ended up with there bbq ham sandwich which smelt and tasted great. There lunch menu is much smaller than there breakfast one but there is hardly a wait after 11am. Just keep in mind to be there before 2pm.

What a meal. Their breakfasts are reasonably priced and come with lots of food. Their country gravy is their own recipe . I had the "cow boy" and don't think I had to eat for the rest of the day. The home style potatoes are well flavored and I would highly recommend getting them. Our 94yr old grandmother liked the corned beef. It is usually pretty hard to get her to eat much, but she demolished it. My only complaint would be the coffee. If you are going to be a breakfast place make sure you have some good coffee. While the cup was never empty, it was fairly flavorless and very weak.

We've been in Tahoe a lot this year for spur of the moment day trips, or quick little overnight family trips, and it has given us the opportunity to try more and more places. Bert's did not disappoint! It was great service, the food was good, and the place was busy but we didn't have to wait for a table (3 of us). The combination of all 3 of these made for a very solid 4 star experience.

Was trying to go to Ernie's (which used to be here but is now across the street), but ended up at Bert's instead. Great place for breakfast. Friendly service, even for a friend who wanted something special. Awesome huevos rancheros. Tasty coffee. Wife had a eggs benedict crepe - which she loved. Really good hash browns.

I understand why people enjoy this spot. Seems to be really popular with the younger crowd. Parking is limited and if you don't get the spaces right in front well then I don't know where you park (it shares a lot with a gas station) The food was greasy goodness but the ingredients were fresh. The staff was nice You will have to wait for a table most likely. The regulars seem pretty resentful of the out of towners. We overheard a few comments. Oh well

On our trip to South Lake Tahoe we stopped here for breakfast, it was the best breakfast my husband and I have had in South Lake Tahoe. The staff was friendly, the biscuits and gravy were simply amazing.. My husband had The Denver Omelet and he was equally impressed with his breakfast. On our way out of town we stopped there again I bought a mug so I could always remember what a great time we had there! I recommend it!

Don't let the outside fool you. While it looks a little Dive-ish, there is some tasty food inside. It was evident this was worth the visit as the parking lot was packed and there was quite a line. Quick customer service, reasonable prices, and good food in large portions. I got the Tahoe omelet and added jalapenos and sour cream. Would not have changed a thing.

Oh, the last day of the ski season, such a bittersweet day. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE the summer, but I am also very excited about having a season pass to Kirkwood (the best resort up in Tahoe) for next season & can't wait for next winter. And even better, Mitch has one too...I will always have someone to go up with=) So Sunday, we go up to ride the last day, buy our passes for next year, take a few extra slushy runs (Spring skiing, whaddaya expect?), then pack up the car & take off for lunch at Bert's in S. Lake Tahoe! We figured because we took such a short day that we'd go grab a bite to eat someplace other than the resort. I picked Bert's because have eaten there before, I remembered how delicious it was! I wasn't disappointed this time either. This place is always packed & we usually have to wait at least 5 minutes to get a seat, but it's worth it! I had the eggs benedict (my staple) & Mitch had an omelet. Both meals come with your choice of hash browns, house potatoes or French fries, & fresh fruit or toast! Talk about a carb overload, but if you were on a pub crawl the night before it'd be perfection! My eggs bene was wonderful, the hash browns were a touch greasy (that was expected), the fruit was ripe & Mitch's house potatoes were quite tasty as well. The server kept our coffee cups full nice, strong coffee & we got out of there for around 25 bucks with tax & tip! Bert's is worth the drive up the hill!

The is a diner-style joint on Emerald Bay Road on your way into South Shore. It's located away from the central part of South Shore so the wait isn't too long. A good variety of breakfast items to choose from. We stuck to the basics -- a combo of pancakes, eggs, and sausage/ham. Good food, very friendly service and decent prices. The only minor thing is that parking can get tough when it's full. Check it out during your next visit to Lake Tahoe.

We tried to go to my favorite spot but it was cash only. So we ended up at Berts, mostly because of the packed parking lot. They turn the tables pretty fast. The food is greasy...but good. Exactly what you would come here for. Of course I order a salad at the greasy spoon.....and had to pick around the rusty and slightly rotting spots. Even so...it was a good salad! My BF had this insane monstrosity called "the cowboy". I wasn't brave enough to try it. The pancakes are excellent, super fluffy. The boy filled up on the huge mug of hot chocolate before his breakfast came, so I ended up eating most of his huge "mouse" pancake.

No one thing jumped out as better than the rest, but every single thing was as good as I'd hope for. Hash browns crisp, pancakes fluffy, eggs just right, and the French toast good enough that even my wife - an avowed Freedom toast hater - raised an eyebrow.

I love corned beef hash. I always have. But I don't like cat food. Most places that say they have "homemade" corned beef hash are still serving it out of the can. Not Bert's Cafe. One of my best plates of hash in a long time. Had flavor, chunks of corned beef and hash browns mixed in. Big fan. The coffee was solid, strong diner coffee and the service was friendly, but not obnoxious. It's everything you want in a diner.

The best breakfast place in Tahoe. Will not eat breakfast anywhere else. After comparing to Ernie's and Red Hut, Bert's is by far the best. Real People. Real food. Real ambiance. Real breakfast. Fast service. Not pretentious like the other places. Doesn't need to be all "cutesy." Let's you substitute if you want pancakes instead of hashbrowns. Brunch Burrito is delicious. French Toast is excellent. Breakfast combo is perfect. Bacon is great. Pancakes are outstanding.

I was up visiting some friends In South Lake over the weekend and Thanks to them I am now aware of yet another Tahoe Gem! They make in house so many different things...corn beef hash, chicken fried steak, biscuits, gravy, etc! The list goes on! Everything we ordered looked and tasted delicious! There was a bit of a crowd, but that is to be expected in a small diner with such great food! A great little place to get away from the busy hustle and bustle of casinos!

Not a bad little breakfast/lunch place for being off the beaten path in SLT. Would eat there again. Huevos good, but corn beef and eggs a little too salty for me.

Had the cowboy. It was delicious! The best gravy I have had in a long time. My wife had crepes Benedict. We were expecting savory but it was sweet. It did not taste good sweet. Her hash browns were over cooked and crisp. Mine were perfect! The only reason this place didn't get 5 stars is because of my wife dish. The only complaint on mine was the biscuit was too dense and bready. Causing the bread to gravy ratio to be unbalanced. I would highly recommend the cowboy to anyone trying this place for the first time. I will definitely be back the next time im in town.

Great family owned diner, good food, decent prices, excellent customer service! Nice friendly atmosphere. Split a pastrami sandwich and mountain burger meal with my wife...both were really good. The best part of the meal was the breaded French fries! Definitely a must stop for Tahoe tourists!

I have visited this café several times in the past 10 years and have enjoyed every meal. Everything is homemade and fresh. The Corned Beef Hash Eggs Benedict is superb - the Hollandaise sauce is tangy and smooth. But the best item on the menu is one I tried yesterday on my way out of town: The Cowboy - two homemade buttermilk biscuits topped with a large, spicy sausage patty, two eggs (any way you like them), and the BEST sausage gravy I have ever had (and I have literally tried it all over the world); comes with a side of hash browns. I couldn't stop eating it and darn near hurt myself trying to finish.

Move over Hut, Denny's, I-Hop, Heidi's, AND all the other breakfast places. This is the place for Fresh Home cooking. Services was so-so. The food made up for it. Killer bacon waffle and good thick English muffin. Do your breakfast right at Bert's. Oh, a Yelp sticker right on the glass when you walk in. Right on!

Good clean food. If your looking for a good home cooked meal, this is the place. There's something for everyone on the menu! My family of four had breakfast and everyone loved their meal! Everything was made from scratch and you could definitely taste the difference. The service was excellent, and everyone was very friendly. We will definitely return.

Yummy! We were on our way back re the West Shore but needed to fill up. We waited less than 15 minutes, the service was personable and fast but we didn't feel rushes despite a small crown waiting for a table in the entry and outside. Husband had the CA omelette and I had the patty melt...both were great. The standout, however, was the cabbage salad that I chose as a aide with my sandwich (fries were an option too). The cabbage salad was awesome!!! Our waitress gave us the ingredients and we had to order a large portion to go...it was that good! We don't frequent the south shore much, but if there is ever something going on over here that we are even a little interested in, we'll come for sure just to eat at Bert's again. It's jammin!!!!

Wish i could have liked this place more than I did. First, its a very small place, with not many tables. It's about as small as the old Red Hut up the street. Ordered a frittata with chorizo and jack cheese. It was just OK, certainly nothing special. The home fries were listless and cold, and I really should have gotten the hash browns instead. The toast, for some reason, was pretty tasty and well....baked. Coffee was abundant and somewhat strong.

Not bad at all, this place gets crowded and busy easily, but all those don't change how great this place is in South Lake Tahoe. A few good stuffs to point out: 1. Try their country gravy if you can, whether on the chicken fried steak or just with their biscuit--rich, but quite delicious. 2. Ribeye and eggs, one of the best dishes for its given price IMO. 3. The Cowboy dish has LOTS of biscuits...if you are looking for carbs for the rest of the day...go for it. I personally was overwhelmed by the load. 4. Huge portions overall, light eaters or ladies should probably try to share. You can probably get extremely satisfied with $15 or less per person. Will definitely recommend.

A classic tahoe restaurant and worth a visit. Their food is always hot and delicious. Generous portions, and decent pricing. The owners can always be found somewhere in the restaurant working behind the counter or serving customers. I have been coming here for years with family and friends and we will continue to do so!

Excellent breakfast! Great biscuits and the sausage patty lived up to the hype previous reviewers had given it. Homestyle diner type of place. No frills. Everybody knows everybody. Less touristy than down the street near the casinos. Almost gets that 5th star.

We had the Mexican omelette and a combination with bacon, scrambled eggs and French toast and a side of home fries. The food was tasty but we both found our home fries to be slightly undercooked. The staff is very attentive and friendly and there is a very homey atmosphere. We would return to eat here next time we are in town.

Great place to stop on our way home from Tahoe. We stumbled upon this little gem a couple years ago. Just now getting around to writing a review about our most recent visit. The portions are generous and the service has always been polite and speedy. This is a small place; it can get packed pretty easily.

Sooooo good. We are fresh off the campground. This place doesn't look like much on the outside but its amazing for breakfast. Excellent and attentive service. Food was excellent. We had a frittata and an omelette. Big servings, fresh, and flavorful. Don't miss this place in SLT.

After a 45 minute wait at the Red Hut Waffle Shop, not far from Bert's we gave up and hit up Yelp.com for some more breakfast (now brunch) ideas. After a coffee shop tricked us into stopped there (we thought it was a restaurant), we found Bert's. We almost left here as well. The lack of food was making us moody and there were no parking spaces and a big crowd of people waiting in the front room. But thankfully we just remained calm, stayed patient (mostly) and put our name on the list. We talked to a family that was in town for a wedding that had been at Harvey's. The mother of the bride was ecstatic. She said it was an incredible place for both ceremony and reception. Good to know. Finally, we were seated. I ordered a hot sandwich with a chicken breast (and blackening seasoning on it) and all the good veggie stuff. It also had smoked cheddar that wasn't as melty as I would have liked to see but it was thick cut and tasty. The bread was like a homemade ciabatta roll. Huge, soft, fresh. My fiance hot breakfast. Eggs, bacon, biscuits & gravy. His biscuits were very fresh. He had an orange soda with his breakfast and I had coffee with mine. It was a huge cup and it was kept full. That was nice. The chef behind the counter where we were seated cooked nonstop. Maybe he's called a cook, Gordan Ramsey probably woudln't call him a chef but he'd certainly give the Hell's contestants a run for their money. He was nonstop working for the hour + that we were there. Our food took a long time but it was only him working and he wasn't being anything but diligent so it was really just the number of people ahead of us. A baby was seated behind us near the end of our breakfast (the food was wonderful, by the way). The baby screamed. I wanted to throw a spoon at her. She screamed and screamed. High pitched. Not cries. Screams. Annoying. Other awesome things about this place. I liked their iced tea container. Weird, but I liked it. I liked that their crushed ice was all in tiny little pieces, like shaved ice also. I liked ALL of the staff and their team work. They filled syrups, wiped counters, moved ice, filled coffee, and they worked together to do this. A man at the counter next to me (Bob?) must have been a regular because he seemed to get better service than we did. His coffee was filled first. His food came out first even though we totally ordered before him. They had to ask what he wanted to so it's not like they had it already ready. This is where they lose the star. Treat all customers like they are valuable. Not just the ones you see a lot. $24.14 for two large breakfasts and two drinks with friendly, smiley service. Good deal.

Usually yelp doesn't lead you the wrong way but this time it did. Besides the staff being so friendly & nice, Im trying to understand why this place has 4/5 stars reviews. It was a 45 minute wait only to be disappointed with tasteless food. The hot chocolate was way too sugary and the breakfast brunch burrito was bland and tasteless. My husband also said he has had better "huevos rancheros". Do not recommend this cafe...

As other places in Tahoe go up and down my appreciate for Bert's just increases. Went again last week. It is just a great, hearty breakfast for someone in need of a 'Tahoe Breakfast' The wait can be bad on weekends, but after going this many times I have figured out times I have to get there by to minimize the wait. Simply put, best breakfast in Tahoe to power you up for the day.

This review is for potential tourists, foodies and fellow world travelers who know that regardless of what someone says in a review, you should always consider the source. I've been to Bert's several times because I wanted to give them every opportunity to earn their reputation here on Yelp and for the most part, I definitely understand. Consider the time-frame that the 5-star reviews are written and that will tell you a lot, such as at the end of the summer season (autumn-ish) the majority of tourists visiting here are from rural parts of CA and NV. Imagine what the food is like in those places and remember not to compare them to larger, more modern cities. The truth is that Bert's stays busy because they have a lot of loyal local patrons that come in and it isn't hard to see why. The waitstaff is extremely friendly and though I've yet to meet the owner, I hear good things about him as well. As for the food... it is typical diner fare at vacation-spot-prices and across the board (meaning from breakfast-lunch) it is a decent value, considering Tahoe is for the majority of Yelpers- a tourist town. Are the eggs runny? Usually, sure. When you ask for Bacon, or Potatoes extra crispy do they come out 1/2 soggy? Sadly, 9/10 times yes. Are the vegetables always soaked in oil? I'd say that's a fair assessment. Do they serve healthy fare? Not-so-much. So why eat here? Well, it's a diner. It doesn't claim to be a 5-star dining experience, nor do they boast false claims like "The Healthiest___", "Farm to Table", or even "The Best ____ " anything. Bert's is a local greasy spoon where you feel welcomed and for many out there, it probably reminds them of home. As far as the kitchen staff (excluding the owner) unfortunately they have a bad habit of speaking about the customers in Spanish, ignorantly thinking that no one understands what they're saying, which is a shame, especially when one considers that in the state of California, Spanish is almost everyone's second language. The portions are large- seriously large. When you order a 2-egg breakfast, expect the eggs to be substantial. Although 1 biscuit with gravy may not sound like a lot, after they split the biscuit in half and douse it with some of the most incredible gravy (and I'm not a biscuits & gravy kind of guy) ever, trust me, it's a meal in itself. There is often a wait to be seated (keep in mind this place stays busy in the off-season as the locals are regulars), so during the busy-tourist-season one can only imagine that with so many positive reviews on Yelp that a lot of newbies will probably migrate here, so if you're looking for alternatives there are a few other places in town where the food may be slightly better, but the atmosphere can't really compare. If you're from L.A., or the Bay area and are looking for something on the healthier side- check out the Cup of Cherries, or the Bear Beach Cafe. At least their Breakfast fare is properly cooked although the prices are about the same. The staff in both places are also extremely friendly. If you don't mind Mexican for breakfast (not just breakfast cooked by people of Mexican decent) then I highly suggest Local's Brunch Cafe. Great chips and salsa and delicious Breakfast Burritos. Once again, if you're expecting something like you'd find down in San Diego, then be sure to ask for your Burrito without the re-fried beans as they tend to automatically add it, but their service is great and the food is tasty.

We had a great breakfast as we were leaving Lake Tahoe. My husband had a breakfast burrito which he said was great. I had the Cowgirl which was very delish but way too much food. Too bad we couldn't take our leftovers on the long drive home. Wait staff was excellent and service was really quick. We'd definitely go here again!

This is one of those few times that Yelp and their reviewers lead people totally astray. After a long hike through the woods my group wanted to grab some late breakfast. We settled on Bert's due to the favorable reviews and proximity. When we arrived we could barely get a seat - usually a good sign. Then we ordered food. The coffee was poured and tasted like cigarette butts as it was probably on the burner since the cafe opened earlier that morning. The hollandaise sauce on my crepes benedict came out with quite a disgustingly frigid temperature and near solid consistency. The "blackened cajun" chicken looked and tasted more like "burnt" chicken. I know we were in Tahoe, but the price did not match any of the meals either. The staff, while friendly, didn't seem to understand the skill of filling water and coffee up when reserves are low. I honestly have no idea why this is rated as a 4-star cafe on Yelp. Overall, Bert's Cafe left me bitter and wishing I had went to Denny's for my heaping serving of morning disappointment.

Great food, great staff. Be prepared to wait a few minutes (maybe 30) to be seated. If you want to get in and out, get their very early. I had the eggs Benedict, and it was top notch. I would go back.

Berts has always been a favorite breakfast spot of my family. We have been traveling to tahoe for the past 25 years of my life, and every trip we make a point of going here. Even today, on my honeymoon, my new husband and I made the trip the Bert's. It was so worth the hour drive. The service was great. Our server was a very nice girl, who made sure I always had plenty of coffee!! I had the Rachero burrito, which was huge and absolutely amazing!!! My husband had the 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 3 slices of bacon and 4 pieces of toast. He couldn't stop eating because it was so good! You definently need to try Bert's. We flew from North Carolina to eat here. 100% worth the travel.

Great diner near the South Lake Tahoe Y. We stopped here when we got caught in a traffic jam leaving SLT after a long weekend. We thought we could wait it out here, having one last meal before hitting the road. Needless to say, they were slammed with customers coming in who had the same idea as we did. No matter. They were polite, kept the tables moving, and the food was typical solid good diner foods (breakfast mainly). I had their Joe's scramble with the hashbrowns. I think I've made three meals out of it in all, as the portions were huge. We ordered a plate of fries for the table, ostensibly as an appetizer but it got served same time as our meals. Their fries are very tasty so that made up for the timing Don't get your hopes up about the coffee; part of the reason it's not so good is probably due to SLT tap water. Regardless, next time I am in the area, we are returning here for another good meal.

We were in Tahoe for my gf's birthday, and wanted a nice hearty breakfast for our day hiking and exploring. We saw their ad in the tourist info, and the claim that they have the best huevos rancheros. So, I decided to take them up on that claim. It was quite possibly the best breakfast I've ever had, in my life. And, they really were the best huevos rancheros I've ever had. The staff were great, and friendly. The wait wasn't too bad, but they are clearly popular. And the food was definitely worth the wait. The price wasn't bad either. If you're in South Lake Tahoe some morning, you'll be doing yourself a dis-service if you don't eat there.

Bert's is my all time favorite for breakfast or lunch. As a regular patron, the coffee is always fresh & hot, service couldn't be better. There's a lot of variety in the menu with average prices. It's comfortable and clean with ample parking. Love Bert's!

Good ole home cooked breakfasts! Very flavorful and hits the spot every time! A must every time we're in town.

When I'm back home, I make a point to stop into Bert's as often as I can. Bert's is a great locally owned cafe that supports the local schools. It's a very popular place, with limited parking and and even more limited waiting area. There is often a 30 minute wait on busy Tahoe weekends, but it's worth every minute. I generally order coffee, huevos rancheros, and a side of sourdough. Never had a bad experience. The staff is very friendly and attentive. There is another similar cafe just across the street, but in my opinion there is no competition.

Best breakfast in Tahoe! Huge portions and great coffee. Fast service too! There was a bit of a wait...but it was worth it. I had the pecan waffle, and my boyfriend had the breakfast burrito. It was HUGE! He couldn't even finish it, and he is a big eater. We will definitely be back.

While passing through town my wife and I luckily discovered this family owned diner. My Mexican Omelet was creatively prepared and exceptionally flavorful. My wife voiced the same comments about her meal. Service was top notch as well. In our opinions we received great value for the price paid. Would we go back? Absolutely.

Bert's offers lots of great choices for breakfast and lunch--your typical American diner fare plus a few Mexican-influenced options, most for under $10. The chicken fried steak and corned beef hash benedict are excellent (if overly indulgent) picks. The atmosphere is cozy and the service is quick and friendly. One of the best breakfast spots in South Lake Tahoe, though unfortunately no booze (so you'll have to forgo Sunday morning mimosas).

We stopped on our way into Tahoe for lunch and had a great experience. Super friendly staff and great food, so we decided to stop in on our way out of town and they again exceeded our expectations. The Mountain burger is amazing!

Injured and hungover, couple of us decided to be somewhat productive and grab breakfast at Bert's. The 5 of us squished into one booth and proceeded to look at their extensive creative menu. Food: 3 stars Brunch Burrito ( yelp.com/biz_photos/K9bd… ): This burrito caught my eye. Eggs, turkey, zucchini, mushroom, tomato and cheese with salsa on top. The combination of ingredients was quite refreshing, especially with the crunchiness of the zucchini. A saucy salsa would've made it perfect since it was a bit on the dry side. I didn't try the rest of the food, but here are the pictures! -New York Steak & Eggs ( yelp.com/biz_photos/K9bd… ) -Spinach & Tomato Eggs Benedict ( yelp.com/biz_photos/K9bd… ) They also have a corn beef hash Benedict. How intriguing. -Strawberry Crepes: My friend wanted a sweet crepe and was recommended this. Unfortunately, the crepe was super thin and swam in a pool of strawberry syrup. Wish I had taken a picture of this. Nevertheless, the crepe turned soggy and was left untouched. Service: +1 star Super friendly staff. My friend had badly sprained her ankle the day before. When the server saw her limping into the café, they brought a chair for her to rest her leg. We wondered if this café and Ernie's café across the road were related. Get it? Bert and Ernie. Anyways, no relations. Hehe.

Bert's? More like squirts! Don't get me wrong, the food here is good.... But my first time here, I left and spent the majority of the day on the toilet! Second time eating there...(chorizo breakfast burrito and cinnamon waffle split between two people...of course, I'm no fatty) I took three trips to the very private stalls at Harvey's! Bottom line? Good food....bad diarrhea.

Four visits for breakfast over the last 6 months and each time was outstanding. Ham steak was HUGE for $13. Pancakes, Eggs Benedict, fresh fruit, biscuits and gravy, all excellent. They make a house made sausage patty which is really tasty. The service is friendly and I'll continue to give them my business.

While staying in South Lake Tahoe, we were looking for a good breakfast spot. This was our second attempt, and a good deal more successful than our first. Bert's is a little bit of a drive from downtown Tahoe (Heavenly Village Area) - about 5 miles. Which isn't terribly far, but not walking distance. Check their website for the location or use the address from Yelp - there was something weird with how it was plotted that made it look considerably closer than it actually was. When you pull up, you realize that this is definitely a place that the locals go - it looks like a warm, friendly, rural restaurant. When you enter, that feeling is reinforced. It's not fancy, but it is comforting. We were warmly greeted when we entered, and seated promptly. Our waitress asked if we wanted coffee, and she gave us a couple of mugs of good coffee, leaving room for cream in mine. (This sounds like a small thing - and it is - but it's annoying as heck when it doesn't happen). We took our time perusing the menu. My husband ordered the huevos rancheros, which were very good. I thought they could have used a touch more salt, but he thought they were excellent and was a member of the "clean plate club". I ordered their biscuits n gravy. It was served with two fluffy buttermilk biscuits, each of which was rather large. The gravy was flavorful and rich, and soaked into the outer perimeter of the biscuits. It was a large portion - I took more than 1/2 to go. It wasn't the best biscuits n gravy I have ever had - but it was probably as close as I've gotten since my last visit to Savannah. That being said, I probably wouldn't order it again - while it was good, I would try something else (like the Crepes Benedict or the breakfast steak.) Our waitress was great about checking in with us - often enough, but not too often. She asked before topping off coffee, which I appreciated. She also remembered to leave plenty of room for cream. Oh yeah, one little thing - almost as soon as I was done pouring cream into my coffee and stacking the little cups inside of one another, someone was by to take them away. This is a really small thing, I know, but I really appreciated it - what can I say, I like a tidy table! Other things that we noticed: they make a lot of their product from scratch, including the batters for the pancakes, waffles, etc. They also make their own hollandaise. I'm always a sucker for a breakfast frittata, and they had several on the menu. Most of the breakfasts were between $8 - $13, and coffee was ~$2 a person (with plenty of refills). In the end, it was a little steep for breakfast ($27 with tip) but it was a good experience. I would recommend it, especially if you are looking for a honest comfort food.

Stopped here on our way out of town to eat and so glad we did. The rest of my party ate some amazing looking omlettes while I opted for a Mountain Burger. All I can say is we will definitely be making this our regular food stop when staying up here

Looking for breakfast in South Lake Tahoe on a late June weekend. Everywhere right in town was super busy and we were getting starving and annoyed so we drove out of our way to Berts based on the Yelp reviews. We were so glad we did! Berts is a little old diner that seems to be a family business. They were very busy and the servers and cooks were in constant motion. I had the Eggs Benedict and wow! I have tried Eggs Benedict in several little local diners in various California towns and I can safely say these are the very best I have ever had. The sauce was absolutely perfect. They came with homefries that were a bit too crispy for me but not bad. My coffee cup was a little bit neglected but the place was extremely busy and the servers kept up quite well in general and were very friendly. We sat at the counter where we could see the cooks and they seemed to be enjoying themselves too. Highly recommended.

Visited in late March 2014. Nice diner-style food. I found the food we ordered here a bit tastier than the competing Bert's Cafe just across the street, but they are both great to hit up as local choices.

I've been here twice now on two separate visits to Tahoe. The food is amazing and the prices are super reasonable. Both times I've had the breakfast burrito (add avocado) and my boyfriend has had the meat lover's omelette. Both are so, so good and the sourdough toast is also highly recommended. The service is great and there's really nothing to complain about here. Will definitely come back every time I'm in Tahoe!

This place is a Staple here in Lake Tahoe. Classic "local's" cafe, there is good reason why us locals in Tahoe eat here & recommend it. Relaxed atmosphere, great fresh food, great surroundings, you name it it's ALL GOOD! Crepes Benedict is their best & most unique dish IMO, thee reason I trek across town from NV to eat here now & then, & I CAN'T stand going into Commiefornia! Friendly service, good coffee, comfortable booths, just a relaxing eating place. Only complaint is that Bert's is not located in NV!

This is a diner joint. Its a great place to come in for expedited service and a tasty breakfast. I doubt anything here will blow your mind, but the bottom of your coffee cup is something you will never see. My wife and I were quite satisfied, they are friendly and give you a locals welcome. The place is small and narrow. Does this take away from the restaurant? Nope, its small and friendly and you should expect to here coffee cups clanging, servers zipping by saying orders to other staff members, the back kitchen flipping and sizzling your meal. This is an American Diner. I will be going back

The breakfast burrito was delicious as was the biscuits and gravy. We haven't eaten here in about three years but it's as great as we remembered it! The service was excellent as well. They were attentive but not overbearing.

Good place to eat. Met bert. Real nice guy. His wife waits tables too. His staff is always policing up the tables and filling big cups of coffee. I had the crepes benedict but thought the sauce was to sour. Potatoes were okay. Wife had 9 grain oatmeal and it was good but I don't like boiled bird seed. :-) we will be back.

Still looking for good pancakes but really a great breakfast in Tahoe-So far no luck. HELP ME Had breakfast here this AM while I was waiting for my wife. Since I was alone I sat at the counter next to the kitchen where all the servers are. The hostess was good she brought me a menu and water-I don't drink coffee-that addicting stuff. After closing my menu a server came by after about 5 minutes and asked if I ordered. Remember the comment above-I was right next to all of them (3). They all ignored me. Yes I know it was only me but hey, say hi, acknowledge me or something. So I ordered my short stack, I'm only 5'8" tall, I thought that was appropriate and a scrambled egg on the side. The server asked me how I wanted those eggs, HEY I just told you scrambled. Food came out hot, it should be since I could see them cooking it. The eggs first probably 3. I knew she wasn't listening to me. The pancakes, two, which covered the plate-they were huge. The eggs were great. The pancakes were a little gummy. PLEASE tell me where I can find a good breakfast in Tahoe. Still searching for a great breakfast in Tahoe. At this point I would settle for good.

Came here after reading Yelp reviews. Not disappointed at all, totally met our expectations. Chicken fried steak was outstanding as was the Chorizo Mexican Omlette. Great coffee too. They're super busy on weekend with a least 30 min wait but if you like late breakfast you'll be seated within 15 mins. It's a small joint with booth-seating only.

Fellow Yelpers Lee and Meg first tried out Bert's with the "Lady K" and I on one of our first Tahoe visits and we hadn't forgotten what great food & service we had way back then. Recently the "Lady K" and I returned and WOW this place is so great! I wish it was closer to SF! As soon as you walk in you feel like you are family. Always a smile from EVERYONE that works there. The portions are big and can be shared but why limit what gets served at your table. My personal favorite is the hot chocolate and make your own omelet. I mean how can you go wrong here? You can't. I'm counting the days to our next Tahoe trip. Enjoy!

Another brunch in Tahoe. This place is for sure not as good as Red Hut, but it's pretty decent for a diner-type of place. The mexican-style breakfast, Huevos Rancheros was pretty good, but the bone-in ham I order is a bit too salty (comparably I like IHop more). Egg benedict is decent but I don't know if i can really be "world-class" ^^ Waited longer than Red Hut, maybe we went at a really bad time...

We came here for breakfast & were not disappointed. All parties at our table ordered the chicken fried steak & eggs. It was really good & not overly bready like some I've had. The gravy was very nice & meaty tasting. Service was quick & friendly even though the place is busy! Coffee was great, too. Overall a great place to eat at in SL. I looked at several other plates going to other tables & all food looked great.

Most delicious breakfast I've had in a long time. I had the walnut waffle and it was perfect. My dad had the meat lover's omelette and he couldn't finish it. Wonderful atmosphere and very friendly, efficient staff. You feel like you went to your cool Aunt and Uncle's house for breakfast. I'll definitely be returning when I come back to Lake Tahoe!

Read yelp reviews and thought it sounded legit. It was NOT. Literally not one good thing except for the service-our server was really nice. Coffee-dirty water Eggs Benedict-eggs were basically hardboiled, not even resembling a poached egg Hollandaise sauce-tasted like greasy yogurt. Not good at all. Hash browns-tastes like fake butter, probably something like "Phase" or something else that is meant to taste like butter Fruit-weird chemical taste, like it was out of a can (although they weren't, they were clearly fresh). My husband, who is a garbage disposal and LOVES fruit, couldn't even stomach it. Will never go back. Cute spot, nice folks, bad food.

Love the older diner feel and look with a mountainesque vibe.. The service is wonderful, fast and friendly. The food...delish! Hubby loves the biscuits and gravy while my fave is the french toast. Endless coffee and an all around , simple, laid back, friendly dining experience. Berts is also involved and supports the community which is always a plus for me. Don't be discouraged by a slight wait sometimes....it's worth it.

After staying the night at my friends cabin in South shore, when we woke up the next morning, we were talking about getting food, then the girl who owned the cabin talked about Bert's cafe! I looked it up on yelp right away and the pics and the food looked so good! I ordered the hot chocolate with the whip cream and Huevos Rancheros both were amazing! good little breakfast spot in south lake! fast service too. the place was pretty crowded.

Found this place during a trip to Lake Tahoe for my birthday weekend back in August. We saw a bunch of cars outside and figured it had to be good. After a 15 minute wait, which I didn't mind, we were seated at a booth and our drink order was taken. For this meal I went with the waffles and hash browns and eagerly awaited my breakfast food. When it came? It was delicious! The hash browns weren't frozen out of a bag and I could tell they were fresh. The waffle was equally delicious and the perfect size. The next time we ate there I got an omelet and those yummy hash browns again. This time we were sitting at the bar and once again I was blown away from the food itself. I also got some hot chocolate to warm myself up and it was great. The staff was friendly, we were never forgotten, and the prices were great for the amount of food you get.

A short wait on a Wednesday morning. Super friendly staff. Weak coffee but a really great meal. I had a typical diner breakfast- scrambled eggs, sausage, hashbrowns and a slice of French toast. All was wonderful. The fruit bowl my boyfriend and I shared was a bit on the old side with a strange flavor- but other than that all was well! Would definitely go back.

Stopped here after the bartender at our hotel recommended it. The food was good I ordered the crepes Benedict which was interesting and tasty, my brother got the ham steak which was huge and delicious. the home fries are made from fresh potatoes and are very well seasoned. Would have gotten a four star if not for the prices came out to around $70 for four of us I think it was because they charge for every little thing you ask for side of salsa, peppers, ranch..we got charged $2 for each of those things overall a good breakfast place.

This place is seriously awesome. I came here with my boyfriend when we came to SLT, we were waiting for some friends to arrive and we were really hungry. After looking at many places we finally found Bert's Cafe. This cafe has a very homey place. It seemed like all the guest knew everyone, def a place for regulars. Our waitress was extremely nice and made sure everything was perfect. Plus our food was amazing, one thing that really stood out to me was the bacon waffels, seriously, they are to die for. Overall my boyfriend and I really enjoyed this cafe and if we are ever in the area again, we will be back!

First time at this little homey breakfast place. The food was tasty & all homemade. I had the cornbeef hash & eggs with raisin toast. The hubby had over easy eggs w/ a homemade sausage patty. All in all everything was good. Nothing bad to say at all. Also the waitress was so nice & always had a smile. Will definitely go back when we are in Tahoe!!

  • Kathi H.

2.5 stars for the food rounded to 3 because we received excellent, friendly service from both the waitress & the owner. Made breakfast good fun. So here's my take: it's a casual, inexpensive, typical breakfast place that's very popular w/the locals. Hubby & I use to eat at places like this in Tahoe when we skied a whole lot more & when the bodies could take grease, salt, sugar & fat a whole lot better than now. Pretty much the same breakfasts served today; a bit greasy (depending on what you order), restaurant coffee, large portions & specials that are popular (breakfast burrito). For the area, I think Bert's, Ernie's or Red Hut is better than the casinos. Definitely better than Denny's IMHO, but I haven't been to a Denny's since Christ was a child. I won't even go to Denny's on my birthday for a free breakfast. Where would I eat breakfast if someone paid me (or not) & I had the time? Where ever I was staying that had a kitchen in the Lake Tahoe area so I could cook. That's the way I feel about breakfast. Ever watch Grodon Ramsay make scrambled eggs? That's how I like & make scrambled eggs. So, for Lake Tahoe you have the casinos, Denny's, Red Hut & Bert's, there's a couple of other places that we have to check out, looks to be the bagel/egg sort which has it's niche fo sure!

We've been in Tahoe all week and have even very disappointed with breakfasts and lunches around Heavenly. Found Bert's this morning while waiting for a flat tire to be repaired and we were pleasantly surprised! Fast service and great food. We had their chicken fried steak (gravy was very tasty) and a frittata that was packed full of goodness. We'll definitely put this top of the list on our next trip up.

Funny that Bert and Ernie's are across the street from each other. Bert's I found out actually took over Ernie's old location. Breakfast at Bert's is good but just not as good as Ernie's. The space is cramped, the parking lot is tiny and the restaurant itself also has limited seating and space. It took 10 minutes to find parking and another 10 to get seated on Sunday morning. The food is hearty like Ernie's. Nice big, greasy servings. The menu cover promotes their made from scratch items (including crepes, pancakes and biscuits) and their "world class speciality items". The food was just mediocre. I had a fried egg sandwich which was fine. My two girlfriends ordered the Healthy Oatmeal (a world class speciality item) and they said it wasn't so world class. It was hot oatmeal that came with bananas, blueberries, brown sugar and toast. My boyfriend was disappointed with his California Omelet (zucchini, avocado, tomatoes) as he poured about half the bottle of tabasco sauce on it since it was bland. My other friend that got the biscuits and gravy and loved it. It came with like 3-4 homemade biscuits covered with gravy. Looked crazy. Bert's is comparable to Ernie's but has slightly less character just like on Sesame Street. The food and atmosphere falls a little short although prices are cheap.

This is one of the better breakfast places that I have eaten at in SLT. The food is really good and staff is very friendly and attentive. Bert's is also in a great location if you are looking to grab a bite to eat on the way out of Tahoe to ski at Kirkwood or Sierra. Skip the crappy buffets and restaurants at the casinos and heat out to Berts!

Outstanding place for an all-American breakfast or lunch. Traditional looking roadside diner, with friendly staff and delicious food. The omelettes in particular are outstanding, and are much lighter and fluffier than what you get elsewhere. Highly recommended!

A local told us that Bert's Cafe is THE place to go for breakfast so we stopped there on our way back to the Bay Area from Tahoe. We were definitely NOT disappointed! The hot chocolate with whipped cream is a must (best I've ever had). Loved the eggs benedict, hubby loved his corn beef hash breakfast. Definitely recommend! Excellent service, they constantly check on you to see if you need anything!

I've visited this cafe twice now and I feel I can now rate it. One visit with my husband and 2 kids and the other visit with 2 girlfriends. I had the same waitress both times. We were promptly greeted and seated. Given water and asked if we'd like anything else to drink. The first visit, my sons wanted to use the coffee mugs for their beverages, but before I could ask the waitress to fill their mugs, another young waitress snatched the mugs from my kids hands---(not exaggerating) I had the egg combo with bacon and french toast. Hubby had combo with bacon and pancakes. All was pretty good tasting. Second visit, greeted and seated promptly. All food ordered was warm and tasty. I didn't like that 2 orders came out and we waited another 5 minutes for the 3rd order. AND, strangely enough, the cook himself brought out the 3rd order and as he placed it on the table, the english muffing slid a little off the sandwich and onto the plate and HE picked it up and put it back on the sandwich right in front of us. Then, wiped his hand on his pants pocket (which was crusted with a mix of other food scraps) NO, he didn't have a towel, or apron or hat or hairnet...he looked like he just walked in off the street. One other thing that was a little distracting was the guy working behind the counter giving the waitresses shoulder and neck massages. Yes, this is a small town, family-run business and I'm sure everyone is really close...but let's stay a little professional.

food was great. a very homey place to go to. i ordered the brunch burrito and my bf ordered the meat omelette and we were satisfied with both. the hot chocolate was great and i took the mug home for a small price. the service was very attentive. the only downfall was that i found a thing in my water which was gross... but whatever. the food was great and i didn't get sick. definitely recommend this place if you like non chain restaurants.

I went to tahoe with my family, and on our way out we decided to stop for lunch. Originally we wanted to go to lake tahoe pizza, but unfortunately that was closed from 4-10. We wandered down the street until we saw Bert's cafe, and was originally turned off by its appearance. However, my mom convinced us to go inside. The restaurant itself was very quaint, and was filled. I ordered the special of the day, which was the black and bleu burger with fries and a soup. The chicken noodle soup wasn't that great, but the burger and fries were AMAZINGGG. The fries were slightly seasoned, which made them better than regular fries. The rest of the family ordered the bueno burger (which was alright.. not too bueno haha!...), the turkey sandwich with avocado, and a chicken burger with avocado. Everything that we ordered was delicious, and the entire family left happy. If i went back to lake tahoe, i would definitely go to Bert's again!

What a great find! Standouts: Hasbrowns - Super crispy, perfectly browned Corned Beef - Delicious! One of the best I've had -1 star because the service could have been better. We had to ask for coffee refills a couple times, but overall it was a pleasant experience. Will be back next time I'm in the mountains!

Nice big breakfast - and not a chain! I really enjoyed it there. Felt like I went back in time, but I like that about South Lake. It has a cozy feel to it and I'm happy to support a local place like this. I'll definitely be back.

The place seemed busy as expected on a Sunday morning. There was a wait but it was tolerable. I was seated at the counter and the waitress seeemed perturbed at first that the front door people sent me there 'early'. The staff didn't seem to suffer from people pleasing syndrome, just a bunch of female robots doing their thing....but one of them did keep my cup of coffee topped off. Ultimately that's what I wanted. I ordered a California omelette...wasn't too long of a wait. It was good, tasted 'homemade like' not too greasy hashbrowns...no loads of cheese on the omelette and that's a good thing. I was trying to strike up a conversation with an inked up chick sitting next to me, just to pass the time... about her arabic tattoo the meaning of which I'm Googling next...though I'm sure it doesn't mean 'friendly'..LOL a good meal...reasonably priced enough, plenty of parking, clean. I'll be back.

Bert's clearly serves a lot of locals. It was a bit out of the way, but a good breakfast. I chose the Cowboy, biscuits with sausage, egg, gravy, and potatoes. It was delicious. My husband chose the Huevos Rancheros, which he really enjoyed. Our service wasn't fabulous.

Great food and great service! Our server was super friendly. The corned beef eggs benedict was really good. My friend ordered a side of pancakes. I was able to try a bite and they were absolutely amazing. They seriously melt in your mouth and all you need on them is a little bit of butter. I may have to order pancakes next time I am there. Bert's Cafe is a definitely a place to go if you're in South Lake Tahoe.

Yes, I am a local, and yes, I LOVE this place. The wait staff is awesome and the food is delicious. I've been here more than I can count, and it's always good. It is a bit over-priced when it comes to drinks, but other than that, it's super! I recommend the blueberry pancakes.

I ate breakfast there a few times while in Tahoe. One morning a had a Denver Omlet, and it was very tasty and big. Overall, the food was fine and everyone that work there seemed very friendly. Nice to see when the staff at a restaurant really appreciates your business! I will definitely be going back there the next time I'm in town.

Bert's is a great find! Good coffee, delicious food and friendly people. If you order the homemade biscuits and gravy, pace yourself cause you've still got lots more coming and it is equally delicious. We'll be back.

After eating at Ernies Resturant across the street, we were very disappointed. We sat at the counter and it took awhile to get coffee and the all the staff we came into contact with seemed miserable!! One young man that seated us was friendly, other then that pretty much scared ti ask for anything, without getting a dirty look. The food was ok, nothing special. Will not be going back:(

Wonderful breakfast eatery! Kind of a dive and an old school breakfast joint, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I loved their homemade corned beef hash and generous serving of hashed browns. The employees are fun and friendly and best of all Bert walks around greeting customers. It's a win win!

Just went there today, and the service was excellant, didn't wait long to be seated, wait staff was friendly and speedy. My glass was never left empty. The food was great, my husband loved his dish, and believe me my husband is one of the pickiest people I know. We will be back. I thought it was a little pricy though, but worth it.

As a former local, this is one place I make sure I eat every time I visit Tahoe. I've only had lunch here once, but was very impressed with the Greek Salad. Very mild dressing that didn't over-power the dish. Breakfast is my standard and I almost always get the Healthy Oats. This hot cereal is part oatmeal and part heaven. Has a great greasy-spoon atmosphere- but I avoid it on the weekends as the wait can be long, especially for a big group.

Before you leave Lake Tahoe you HAVE to go to Bert's Cafe. The service is friendly and fast. Even though they're always busy they don't try to rush you out. The best part though is their food. No matter what you pick you'll be MORE than happy. Everything is delicious!!

Pretty good service. We were seated quickly and offered beverages immediately. We both had eggs Benedict, he had the traditional which he said was good, I had the sausage patty version, which I liked however, my dish came out with cold Benedict sauce and only slightly warm underneath. We ate breakfast at 12 pm, service was quick, though the waitress did not ask us if we wanted anything else before putting the check on the table. The overall cost wasn't too pricy, $25 for the two of us, two entrees and one cup of coffee. So not bad for the area, I'm a local - I might go again.

This place is AWESOME! My boyfriend and I stumbled upon Bert's on our way home from a romantic ski weekend and had the BEST breakfast ever. We were a little unsure about the place by its unassuming decor but once we sat down and looked at the menu- it was out of this world! Homemade hash benedict with a delicious hollandaise sauce, the Tahoe Special omelette with spinach and bacon, the FRESHLY squeezed perfectly sweet orange juice- we were in heaven! Bert's beats any breakfast diner we've been to- and we try out a lot of places just about every weekend. We're DEFINITELY stopping by again the next time we hit the slopes!!

Initially our plan was to go to Heidi's but at the last moment I switched to Bert's... I am glad I did. This is true hometown greasy spoon that serves up a mean breakfast along with some of the best service around. I love these older places and the interior design and space arrangement. Bert's has the cool single seat bar and booths and wood paneling here and there... perfect! I ordered the Cowboy and didn't know what to expect. When our server placed it on the table I just about died and thought "How the hell am I going to eat all of this?" It was a plate full of a giant sausage pattie, some scrambled eggs, and biscuits and gravy. No greasy spoon here! This was one of the best plates of breakfast I've had in a long time: flavorful, fresh, filling. If you go to a place like this you shouldn't wuss out and get a waffle or panckaes, go big, you won't be disappointed. I ate half of it, and swallowed the rest the next morning.
